Day 01 — The Penny Bridge
What you need
- 2 plastic cups
- 1 sheet of paper
- 50 pennies or washers
- Place the two cups about 6 inches apart and lay the paper across as a bridge.
- Stack pennies in the middle. How many before it collapses?
- Now fold the paper accordion-style, put it back, and re-test. How many now?
The scienceFolding creates ribs that carry the load vertically, so the same sheet of paper becomes far stiffer than it was flat. Your kid has already seen this: it is why cardboard has a wavy layer inside, and why corrugated metal roofing is bent into ridges instead of left flat.
